The Divas Weekly Inspiration
Hello, my wonderful friends!
Well... today's newsletter was almost replaced by a nap.
After lunch, I sat down beside Jason for "just a minute" while he rested his injured ankle. The next thing I knew, both of us were sound asleep.
Apparently, my body had opinions about my schedule that it neglected to run past me first!
The reason for all this resting is that Jason has officially ruptured his Achilles tendon. After several trips to Kaiser and a whole lot of appointments and paperwork, we now know what we're dealing with.
The injury happened in the most Jason way imaginable.
He was carrying a full sheet pan of chicken pieces out to the smoker when he missed the steps, fell down four of them, and landed on his head.
The chicken, however, survived.
Not one piece fell off the sheet pan.
In fact, after the fall, he got up, put the chicken on the smoker, and finished cooking it before we headed off for medical care.
If you've ever met Jason, that story probably doesn't surprise you one bit.
Jason may have ruptured his Achilles tendon, but the strangest thing in this photo still isn't him. Today's photo contains smoked chicken, sweet corn, and one entirely unexpected conversation piece courtesy of Mother Nature.
But I digress. The doctor delivered the kind of news no active person wants to hear: six weeks of absolutely no weight bearing, followed by months in a walking boot. Full recovery could take up to a year.
Now, if you've ever met Jason, you know this borders on cruel and unusual punishment. This is a man who is in constant motion. He's always building, fixing, carrying, filming, lifting, climbing, or creating something. Sitting still simply isn't part of his operating system.
So, life around Diva headquarters is about to look a little different for a while. One thing won't be changing, though. I'll still be here every week, sharing recipes, money-saving ideas, encouragement, and sharing whatever adventures life decides to throw our way. If a newsletter occasionally arrives a little later than usual, you'll know there's probably a good story behind it.
One of the things I've learned over the years is that life rarely follows the neat little plans we make for it. What is it they say? "Man plans and God laughs". Or something like that.
Sometimes the only thing we can do is adjust, help the people we love, laugh whenever we can, and keep moving forward one small step at a time.
Thank you for being part of this wonderful community. Your kindness, encouragement, and friendship mean more than you know.
Now... let's get to the fun part!
Great ideas!
In other news: Porch Party, Anyone?
You don't need a huge backyard or a big budget to create wonderful summer memories. Sweep the porch, put on a little music, pour something cold to drink, and invite a few people you enjoy. This is a great way to get to know your neighbors! Here are a few easy ideas to get you started:
🌿 Make Guests Comfortable A few extra chairs, colorful cushions, a small outdoor rug, and a basket of light blankets for when the evening cools down can make even a tiny porch feel welcoming.
✨ Let There Be Light As the sun goes down, turn on the charm! String lights, lanterns, battery-operated candles, or even a few mason jars with tea lights create instant ambiance.
🥤 Set Up a Self-Serve Drink Station Fill a galvanized tub or cooler with ice and canned drinks, or create a simple lemonade, iced tea, or mocktail station. Guests can help themselves while you enjoy the party instead of playing bartender.
🌮 Keep the Food Simple Skip the formal dinner. Serve simple appetizers people eat with their hands. If you'd like more substantial offerings, try: Build-your-own tacos, burgers, hot dogs, sandwich platters, or a big salad bar let everyone customize their meal while keeping your workload light.
🍦 Host an Ice Cream Social Ask everyone to bring a favorite topping and provide the ice cream. Suddenly, dessert becomes the entertainment.
🎲 Bring Out the Games A deck of cards, dominoes, cornhole, giant Jenga, or a favorite board game gives everyone something to gather around and keeps conversations flowing.
🎵 Create the Soundtrack Put together a favorite playlist before guests arrive. Once the music starts, you'll spend more time visiting and less time searching for the next song. Even better, bust out the guitar and invite musical friends for a summer jam session.
🌠 Stay After Sunset Spread out a few blankets, serve popcorn or s'mores, and spend the evening watching the stars appear. Sometimes the simplest evenings become the ones everyone remembers.
💐 Don't Wait for Perfect Your flowers don't have to be blooming, your furniture doesn't have to match, and your porch certainly doesn't have to look like a magazine cover. Good friends remember the laughter far longer than they remember the decorations.
Diva Tip: Paper plates are perfectly acceptable. Spending the evening laughing with your guests beats spending it washing dishes every single time.
Fabulous Doesn't Require a Crowd
Whether you're hosting the neighbors, inviting family over, or simply treating yourself to dinner on the porch after a long day, good food always makes the occasion feel a little more special.
One of my favorite Diva philosophies is that beautiful meals shouldn't be reserved for company. Set out the pretty dishes. Light the candle. Eat on the porch. Celebrate an ordinary Tuesday if you feel like it. Whether you're feeding twelve or just yourself, these recipes make summer taste a little more festive.
Creamy Homemade Hummus
A budget-friendly Middle Eastern delight in just minutes!
Have you ever noticed how much you can accomplish when someone says, "We'll be there in an hour!"?
Suddenly, you're a cleaning superhero.
Today, we're going to borrow that energy... without actually inviting anyone over.
Set a timer for 70 minutes, going off every 10 minutes and imagine your favorite people are on their way. Put on some energizing music and START!
(Short on time? Stop after any section. Do one session each day. Every ten minutes makes a visible difference.)
Minutes 1-10: The Great Gather
Grab a trash bag and a tub, basket or tray. Race through the house collecting every stray dish and every piece of trash you see. Don't stop to wash anything yet. Just gather.
Minutes 11-20: Kitchen Rescue
Fill the sink with hot, soapy water and let those dishes soak while you tackle the rest of the kitchen. Load the dishwasher or wash what you can by hand. Empty the trash and put in a fresh bag. Clear the counters, put away anything easy, stack the rest neatly, then give the countertops a quick wipe. When the timer goes off, you're done. No perfection allowed.
Minutes 21-30: Bathroom Refresh
Put cleaner in the toilet first and let it do the work while you clean the mirrors and wipe the countertop. Swish the toilet, replace the hand towel with a fresh one, and admire how much cleaner the room already feels.
Minutes 31-40: Living Room Lift
Clear the coffee table and other flat surfaces. Dust whatever you can reach, starting with the TV. Fluff the pillows, straighten the throws, and if you enjoy it, light a candle. Instant cozy.
Minutes 41-50: The Five-Foot Vacuum
You are not deep cleaning today. Vacuum only the places people actually walk and see. Skip the corners. Skip under the furniture. Give the middle of each room a quick pass, then move on.
Remember, we're aiming for "fresh," not "white glove inspection."
Minutes 51-60: The Walk-Through
Pretend you're seeing your home through a guest's eyes. Pick up dirty laundry, tuck away anything private, straighten the beds, and move anything that feels out of place.
Minutes 61-70: Get Ready for the Party
Drink a big glass of water. Wash your hands and face. Brush your hair into a chic ponytail. Change into a fresh shirt. Add a little fragrance, your favorite earrings, or a swipe of lipstick if that makes you feel good.
Then...
Sit down.
Look around.
Even if no one rings the doorbell today, you've just given yourself the gift of a home that's a little calmer, a little cleaner, and a lot more welcoming. Burned a few calories, too.
And honestly? You deserve to enjoy it every bit as much as your guests would.
Let's do this! You can pretend I'm that friend (except you know I'd help you clean your house)
That’s it and that's all for today.
Summer has a way of reminding us that some of life's best moments don't require elaborate plans, right Reader?
Thank you for spending part of your week with me. If you enjoyed today's newsletter, I'd be so grateful if you'd share it with a friend or invite them to join our wonderful community.
Until next time...
Stay fabulous, stay frugal, and keep finding little ways to make everyday life feel a little more special.
Onward and awkward! Diva Patti D.
Grace Notes:
Fresh flowers are lovely, but you don't have to buy them. Clip a few sprigs of herbs, flowering branches, or even interesting greenery from your yard and tuck them into a small vase or jar. Nature has been decorating for free all along.
Before guests arrive, place a pitcher of ice water with lemon or cucumber slices on the table. It's inexpensive, beautiful, and makes everyone feel instantly welcome... including you.
The nicest dishes in your cupboard don't know whether it's a holiday or a Tuesday. Use them anyway. Everyday meals deserve a little celebration, too.
Before you leave the house this weekend, take thirty seconds to fluff the pillows, straighten the throw blanket, and clear the coffee table. Coming home to a room that welcomes you is one of life's little luxuries.

The Divas Weekly Inspiration Well, hello Reader, I am tired of writing. And I don't want to cook dinner tonight. I know, I know. For someone who writes about food for a living, that sounds a bit like a plumber admitting they don't want to look at another pipe. But after my regular weekly newspaper column, four freelance articles, a course revision, countless emails, a class syllabus, and more words written than I care to count, I was ready to hang a "Gone Fishing" sign on the keyboard. Or...
The Divas Weekly Inspiration Howdy Ho Reader! Watch out, Mama's on a health kick. You know that means everyone will be eating kale and turmeric this week! LOL! Well, you see, I’ve been taking in a little extra education lately, and I came away feeling both inspired and recommitted. It’s easy to forget, in the middle of busy days and tight budgets, that food isn’t just one more thing on the to-do list. It’s the Foundation. Of. Everything. It affects how we feel, how we think, how we function...
The Divas Weekly Inspiration Hello Reader, I'd like to share an observation. It's something that has changed drastically during my lifetime and I'm not sure if it's a totally good thing. We’ve become used to getting everything so quickly. If we want something, we buy it, we pay with a credit card and sometimes it shows up at our doorstep within hours. If we’re hungry, we order food and whatever we want appears on the porch. If we feel like doing something fun, we make it happen right away. And...
